Rethymnon, or Rethymnon, is a city and port built by the Venetians, a popular tourist center today with a developed infrastructure: there are many cafes, restaurants, shops, as well as a well-preserved old part of the city with a pedestrian zone.

25 km from Rethymno is one of the most revered ancient monasteries in Crete — Arkadi. The monastery, built in the Baroque style, has become a symbol of the struggle for independence and is secretly called the «Arkadi Holocaust». UNESCO awarded the monastery the status of a monument of freedom.

25 km from Rethymno is the largest freshwater lake in Crete — Kournas. It is interesting that it is located three meters below sea level, and its depth, according to official data, is 25 meters. That is why in some areas the water in Qurna seems black. You can explore the lake by boat — admire the peaceful landscapes around from the water. There is a free beach on the shore, as well as a tavern where grilled meat is excellent.
