Creative thought knows no bounds, and, copying the magnificent masterpieces of antiquity, our designers offer to decorate their home gardens with artificial reservoirs — ponds, and even lakes with fountains, cascades and waterfalls. Despite the apparent complexity of execution, thanks to modern technology and design skills, the creation of an artificial pond today is not very difficult.
Choosing a place for a reservoir
When choosing a place on the site where our man-made pond will be located, you should first determine why you actually need it. If you are creating a reservoir in order to be able to enjoy the peace and quiet near it, then the far corner of the site, hidden from prying eyes, will be the best place. And if the pond will act as a general or even the central design element of your site, then, undoubtedly, you will not find a better place than its center.
Pond shape
When choosing the shape of a future reservoir, of course, it is worth putting your personal preferences and tastes at the forefront. However, from a technical point of view, the optimal shape of the pond would be a circle or an oval. This is due to the fact that the cost of building such a reservoir will be minimal, and it will be much easier to take care of it.
Works on the construction of a reservoir
All earthworks for the construction of an artificial reservoir should be carried out exclusively in summer, dry weather. This is due to the fact that the soil should not be wet and loose. Also, only in dry weather, work should be carried out on the waterproofing of the pond.
The easiest way to build an artificial reservoir is to purchase a special bowl for it. Such bowls come in 2 types: plastic and fiberglass. Plastic bowls are cheaper, but it is not a very reliable material, while fiberglass, with its higher cost, is more wear-resistant and not affected by negative environmental factors.
As for the depth and area of the pond, then with its area of \u200b\u200b5 square meters. m., it is not recommended to make it deeper than half a meter.
In order to save money, you can do without a bowl, in which case you should dig a pit. The walls and bottom of the pit must be perfectly aligned, after which it must be poured with concrete. With this option for the construction of a reservoir, it is impossible to do without work on its waterproofing. For this purpose, the concrete pavement is usually covered with a special PVC film.
For decorative purposes, small waterfalls and cascades of stones are also built on artificial reservoirs, and if it is technically possible, you can arrange lighting. Artificial stones are used as decorative covers for sewer manholes. By purchasing a small pump, the pond can be turned into a fountain.
Pond care
As a rule, aquatic plants are planted in reservoirs for decorative purposes, which adds to the hassle when caring for it. It is necessary to regularly clean the pond from accumulated debris, silt and dirt. It is necessary to monitor the integrity of the bowl in time and carry out repairs in case of violation of its tightness.
